Polkemmet Country Park

Case Study
Wicksteed had the pleasure of collaborating with West Lothian Council on a project that aimed to transform the toddler area within the picturesque Polkemmet Country Park.
The client requested an
inclusive
and accessible space for young explorers, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings of the country park. The chosen material for this venture was timber, harmonising with the park's rustic environment.
West Lothian Council sought a toddler area that would cater to the diverse needs of young children. The emphasis was on accessibility and inclusivity, considering the timber-centric park setting.
The design had to incorporate swings and a multiplay unit with a slide, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging play experience for toddlers.
The centrepiece of the play area is the
Marco Polo Multiplay Unit
from our
Young Explorers Range
, with a specific focus on inclusivity and play value.
This alteration not only added play value but also enhanced inclusivity by allowing wheelchair users to actively participate alongside their peers.
To further meet the diverse needs of toddlers, we incorporated a timber swing with a cradle seat and inclusive seat, a
sit-in inclusive springer,
and a
wheelchair-accessible roundabout
.
The choice of 50/50 black and green fleck
wetpour surfacing
seamlessly integrated with other wetpour areas in the site, maintaining a cohesive visual appeal.
Recognising the importance of accessibility, we upgraded the access paths to permeable SUDS-compliant material. This not only ensures durability but also makes the paths suitable for all-weather use.
The strategically designed path starts at the main entrance of the play area, featuring sensory wooden play panels, winds past different play equipment areas, and encircles the new toddler zone and accessible roundabout. This linking path has significantly improved accessibility and safety, making the entire park more user-friendly for everyone.
