George Street Play Space, Sleaford Town Council

Written by The Wicksteed Team, 18 Dec 24

Case Study

Sleaford Town Council approached Wicksteed Leisure with a vision to revamp the George Street Recreation Ground, aiming to make it a vibrant, inclusive, and engaging space for visitors of all ages.

They wanted to extend the toddler area, enhance safety, and incorporate a “wow-factor” toddler unit with inclusive elements.

Additionally, the council was looking to add some exciting junior play equipment near the existing kit, along with a selection of static fitness items to be placed at the bottom of the field.

Working closely with the council, we designed a solution that would transform the recreation ground into an engaging play destination for the whole community.

To help manage costs, we extended the wetpour surface and fenced area by strategically relocating existing steel panels.

This allowed us to focus the budget on new, exciting additions, like the Sharki Multiplay Unit from our Universal range—one of the first installations of its kind—designed to captivate toddlers with vibrant colours and interactive elements.

Accessibility and inclusivity were at the heart of this project.

We installed a wheelchair-accessible roundabout with sensory panels, ground graphics, and a specially designed springy with a backrest and handholds for added support.

An inclusive basket seat swing was also included to provide a swinging experience that everyone can enjoy. For families, accessible picnic tables were placed throughout, ensuring comfortable seating for all visitors.

The play experience for older children received a major boost with challenging equipment additions.

The new junior section features a Crusader group swing, monkey bars with handles for a safer grip, roll-over bars, and an exciting trail of fitness and play items, encouraging active exploration and play.

In response to the council’s request for low-maintenance options, we added static fitness equipment at the far end of the field, minimising the need for ongoing maintenance while still providing functional and durable exercise opportunities.

Additional playful touches, like sensory panels, totems, two-way see-saw and a mini goal were also installed to create a well-rounded recreational space that meets the needs of the entire community.

The revitalised George Street Recreation Ground now offers a welcoming, inclusive environment with opportunities for both imaginative play and physical activity, tailored to toddlers, juniors, and adults alike.
