Wicksteed partnered with Claxby Parish Council to enhance their local play area, creating a space that would cater to all ages and abilities. The project aimed to preserve some of the existing equipment while introducing more challenging play options for older children and incorporating sensory and inclusive elements as requested by local residents. Additionally, a durable and accessible pathway was needed to link these new elements, ensuring ease of use for everyone.
To meet the needs of older children, we installed the ever-popular Pickup Sticks 8 Climber Unit. This versatile, non-prescriptive climbing structure offers plenty of play value, allowing multiple children to engage at once. The design is open and accessible, with no panels that could encourage graffiti or hide children from view, making it a favourite for both children and parents.
A key element of the project was the inclusive design, ensuring that all children could enjoy the space. Wicksteed provided a range of inclusive play items, such as an Inclusive Seat Swing, a Swirl Inclusive Roundabout, and a Sensory Totem. These items were strategically placed along the new pathway, which was made from Conipave—a durable blend of stone and rubber designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and offer a longer-lasting alternative to traditional wetpour. This thoughtful design made it easy for children of all abilities to access and enjoy the equipment.
To complete the space, toddler-friendly items were also added, such as the Drake Multiplay Unit from our Young Explorer Range and the Basket Seat Swing, ensuring that the play area would appeal to children of all ages.
Claxby Parish Council chose Wicksteed based on extensive research, visiting several other play areas and finding Wicksteed equipment to be the most durable. Feedback from other councils reinforced their decision, with many commenting that our products are built to last and spare parts are easily accessible.
This collaboration resulted in a thoughtfully designed, inclusive play area that offers a broad range of activities for children of all ages, ensuring it will remain a vibrant community space for years to come.
