Chestnut Avenue Play Area was an exciting project, aimed at enhancing the play provision provided by the Town Council of Blyth. The project was driven to create a dynamic space where children aged 3 to 16, regardless of their abilities, could engage in meaningful play experiences.
Recognising the importance of catering to a wide age range and abilities, the project team ensured that the selection of play equipment would appeal to various developmental stages. An essential aspect of the design was the integration of at least one wheelchair-accessible piece of equipment. This ensured that children with disabilities could actively participate and interact with their peers in a way that fostered inclusivity.
Situated near the sea, the Chestnut Avenue Play Area faced the challenge of exposure to salty air. To mitigate this, we incorporated a special primer as a protective measure for all equipment and fencing before the painting process. This approach illustrates a commitment to durability, maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the play area, and ensuring its longevity in the face of challenging environmental conditions.
By using High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) panels, we not only ensured resistance against vandalism but also contributed to the play area's longevity. This strategic approach to material selection highlighted the intent to provide a play environment that would stand the test of time while providing children with a safe and enjoyable space to play.
Customer Feedback:
Wicksteed were awarded the contract for the Chestnut Avenue play area which was a new play area that had been requested by residents for quite some time and was achievable with the help of S106 funding from Northumberland County Council. The equipment that has been installed is classed as inclusive for all users and is complimented with an inclusive carousel which was requested as a requirement by Blyth Town Council.
The installation team carried out the work within the timescale they set for the project and the support from the Wicksteed team has been fantastic throughout.
The children that live around the play area and from the surrounding area can now enjoy this for years to come and it has been great to see the high number of children using the equipment already.’
