Romsey Park, Cambridge - a winner of an LGN Street Design Award
With funding through Section 106, an old play area within the park has been revitalised and given a more natural feel. Recycling, sustainability and the natural environment were key factors in this project and, where possible, existing play equipment has been revitalised and retained.
Following a 6-way tender process, Wicksteed Playscapes was given the project to create this new play/exercise area. After lengthly consultation with residents and community groups, the park now boasts a rejuvenated play area with a specified toddler zone.
The teen area, in the main open space, features a multi-use games area, a new timber Cableway and an impressive double Rockscape and a Basket Spinner, as well as lots of other play equipment for older children. What was a disused bowling green has been cleaverly landscaped to give interesting undulations and timber lined banks.
Around the perimeter of the park is a designated running path with groups of 5 Xerscape outdoor gym units positioned at 4 different stations - which will be great for keeping adults and teens fit.
The natural environment is key with a nature reserve for local schools to use, logs for informal seating and the use of recycled sustainable materials and textures throughout - offering an inclusive and tasteful park for the whole community.
