Isle of Wight park with maritime and naval history

Puckpool Park on the Isle of Wight is one of the principal parks on the island and is steeped in maritime and naval history as it is the site of one of the remaining grade 1 listed Batteries.

With the majority of funding through the Council and the remaining through PlayBuilder, a new play scheme was required that needed to be both sensitive to the historial elements of the park, but also offer the latest in play design and provision for both younger and older children - giving them an exciting play experience.

Working with English Heritage, the play area has been finished in muted colours to blend with the park and the use of natural mateials such as wood and grass matting are in keeping with the surroundings.

A relatively flat area with out-dated basic play equipment has now been transformed into one with mounds and revetments and is home to the latest in interactive electronic play equipment - Wicksteed's Play Alive, as well as a Timber Cableway, Pendulum Swing, Hurricane Swing, Rockscape, Revolver - Wicksteed's wheelchair accessible roundabout, and a Mystical World multi-play system for toddlers.

Community involvement in the choice of the new play area was important and consultation was carried out with 12 local schools to find out what children wanted.  An open consultation session was held in the park over a weekend.
