Brambleside Play Team Project - School Feedback

This project was highly organised from the outset.  Staff from Wicksteed Playscapes were friendly and approachable and pitched their presentation to the class at exactly the right level, treating the children as professional designers from the word go.

The visit to the factory was a real bonus and the goody bags were fantastic!  Every child came away having learnt a great deal about design and production and the buffet lunch in the boardroom made them feel very special.

Communication between Wicksteed and the school was outstanding throughout.

Impact on our pupils:

The children have learnt a range of skills that will stay with them for their future lives and careers.

  • Because of the nature of the presentation/project, we have seen achievement in reading and writing rise and all children are now attaining at a higher level.  We had a wry smile on our faces when we opened the Year 6 SATs long writing task (the national test) to find that the set task was writing a biography of a playground designer!
  • All children have developed presentation skills that we know they will now apply throughout the rest of their schooling and hopefully in their future lives.
  • The project enhanced mathematics work through the children working out manufacturing costs and selling costs.
  • ICT skills were developed through the design of the apparatus and also preparing presentation packs.
  • Art and DT were subjects also covered through the design and making process.
  • Speaking skills - without doubt these were developed in all children through their team presentations to the Dragons.  From our point of view, it was amazing to see all children speak clearly to the 'formidable' panel, including one pupil who until recently was an elective mute.
  • Every child has grown in confidence and self esteem and they have gained such a lot from this project.

The school thanks Wicksteed Playscapes for choosing to be involved with our pupils.  Such a valuable experience, exciting project and fantastic opportunity.  Being on TV and the other press coverage just added to the excitement and the feel good factor which spread from the class throughout the whole school.
