Brambleside Community Primary School
Brambleside Community Primary, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, completed a four-week task set by Wicksteed to design an item of playground equipment and present it in a ‘Dragons' Den' style.
33 students, aged between 9 and 11, were briefed by Stuart Wetherell and Helen Septhon-Pike from Wicksteed Playscapes and the next stage was getting the pupils to visit the company so that they could see for themselves exactly what is involved in designing and manufacturing play schemes - so, a detailed tour of the company was organised.
Pupils were shown examples of the high tech, computer-generated playscapes created by Wicksteed's design department and then had a guided tour of Wicksteed's factory, gaining an insight into the materials used and processes involved in the design and manufacturing process.
Dragons' Den Presentation
This exciting project culminated in a Dragons' Den presentation enhanced by a visit from an actual ex-Dragon! Julie White from the company Truly Madly Baby, who was a contestant on the BBC programme in 2005 sat on the panel of judges to help decide the eventual winner.
TV, Radio and Press
Unflustered by the presence of the national press and TV and radio who covered the event, the Dragons in their various groups confidently presented their concepts. Everyone was extremely struck by just how articulate and inventive these creative young designers were! The prize? The lucky team of winners will get to see their design made into a real piece of equipment.
The winners were Team Tropical Breeze with their design of an inclusive roundabout. Watch this space for photographs of the roundabout once it has been manufactured and installed.
