MUGAs provide all round fitness and fun in the North East:
MUGAs provide all round fitness and fun in the North East - Budding Bothams and Beckhams from County Durham will be having a ball over the coming months thanks to Wicksteed-designed outdoor sporting facilities now installed in five different towns and villages in the district.
Youngsters from Chester-le-Street, Ouston, Great Lumley, Edmondsley and Kimblesworth can now get fit whilst having fun at five ballcourts commissioned by the District Council thanks to a massive £200,000 from Big Lottery Funding. The Wicksteed multi-use games areas, which took three months to build, can be used for cricket, tennis, basketball and netball and have steel nets at each end for football.
Councillor Simon Westrip, deputy leader of the Council, said: “This is wonderful news for everyone in the district as it will provide opportunities for young people to get more active and improve their general health and fitness. Who knows, the facilities might even plant a seed for germinating future Olympians!”
The ballparks, which have been installed alongside five playgrounds, have been greatly welcomed by local teenagers who previously felt they had “nowhere to have fun”, said Chester-le-Street District Council’s Leisure Technician, Barrie Alderson.
He continued: “There wasn’t really any provision for older children so I am absolutely delighted with this result. It was great to get the lottery funding and Wicksteed was chosen because of the excellent value for money the company offers. It is part of the Council’s vision to leave something long-lasting and enjoyable for our local communities, especially for our future generations.”
Official open days for the ballcourts are planned for early December and January.
