Huntingdon's first outdoor gym:
Huntingdon's first outdoor gym - Community Parks are an important aspect for any area, so the recent completion of a newly developed site north of Huntingdon is most welcome.
Known as the Xerscape range, these units have proved to be all the rage… for any age!Devised and developed in close collaboration with professionals from Staffordshire University’s Centre for Sport and Exercise, they offer a huge variety of exercises designed to strengthen, stretch and tone muscles and keep the heart strong and healthy.
Huntingdonshire District Council felt it was important to encourage people of all ages and abilities to begin a fitness regime whilst embracing the great outdoors. The equipment is aimed at those aged 12 upwards and provides a great opportunity to exercise in the open air – for free! Councillor Colin Hyams, Executive Councillor for Operations and Countryside Services said; “We are delighted that Coneygear Park has been kitted out with five pieces of new gym equipment for fitness sessions.
With all the news about obesity and overweight problems we hope this unique equipment will further encourage local residents to embrace a healthy lifestyle. The equipment is for people of all ages to enjoy and is one of the best outdoor facilities of its type in the area.”
Built as part of the ‘Heart of Oxmoor’ project – a multi-million pound regeneration programme in which the council worked with partners to improve the quality of life for local residents, Coneygear Park emerged following extensive consultation with the community. Wildlife in the park is also returning since the construction work began and countless birds, butterflies, moths and other minibeasts can be seen and heard flitting amongst the environment whilst the locals enjoy their workouts at the alfresco gym!
